A superb piece of Vietnamese / Annamese ceramic porcelain in the form of a pear shaped vase with stunning detail depicting two fish and decorative panelled bands.
Produced 15th / 16th century this is a very fine piece of Annamese pottery that is particularly well-detailed with a fantastic flow and sense of movement to the scrolling design coming from the fish.
Possibly retrieved from shipwrecked cargo due to the discolouration on the glaze towards the base and on the underside.. as if the the bottom section has perhaps been exposed but somehow not the rest? It's worth noting that the amount of ceramics retrieved by the 15th century Hôi An shipwreck project which began in 1997 was colossal—some 250,000 pieces, and a further 50,000 pieces are estimated to have been haphazardly looted before the project began. I am not sure if the markings correspond with the way shipwrecked can be affected.
Height: 21 cm - Base diameter: 7 cm - Rim diameter: 6 cm
In great condition with crazing throughout and some spots of discolouration.
