Erwin Eichinger (1892-1950) was born in Vienna and studied at the Graphische Lehr – und Versuchsanstalt where he first occupied himself mainly with lithography. Eichinger soon found that his talent for painting was much greater and went on to study at the Viennese Academy of Fine Arts under Professor Rumpler.

In his early thirties, Eichinger's work was exhibited most successfully in Vienna in the main exhibitions such as Kunstlerhaus, Sezession and Zedlitzhalle. During the war, his fine portraits won great acclaim in the exhibitions of “Haus der Deutschen Kunst” in Munich.

Eichinger went onto be a member of a popular Austrian family of figurative artists who painted Tyrolean gentlemen, cardinals, and Rabbis as in 1922 he had a son, Otto, who took up the same profession and had a similar style of painting.

This highly detailed figurate portrait by Erwin depicts a Tyrolean gentleman in traditional dress of the Austrian alpine state holding a jug.
