Antique German Carved Oak Classical Grecian Greek Discus Thrower Wood Plaque
Antique German Carved Oak Classical Grecian Greek Discus Thrower Wood Plaque
A carved oak plaque of Discobolus the discus thrower, or "Diskuswerfer" as titled in German.
A fantastic take on the Classical Greek sculpture complete by Myron around 450 BC... nearly 2500 years on the allure of its depiction has truly withstood the test of time.
An image endlessly replicated in figures and statues, but very rare to find in the form of a carved wooden plaque.
Superbly executed by hand with a great attention to detail likely done in the early 19th century as a piece to appeal to the lavish Grand Tours of the age.
Complete with a touching message on the reverse belittling the strength of man in comparison to the strength of friendship.. presumably it was once given as a gift to someone.
In great condition with minor signs of wear.
