Produced around 1890 - 95 this rare tri-footed bowl in deep red pressed glass features the design know as "Diving Dolphins"
Flowers in relief adorn the outside of the bowl and cheeky dolphins hold up each of the legs, with a fabulous ruffled rim with 16 crimps.
This piece is marked with the Sowerby Peacock only found on the first series of the design.
An early and unusual piece as most examples of the Diving Dolphin bowl you see comes from the designs revival in the 1920s when Sowerby began to produce iridescent glass. This piece is from the original series which was first produced in 1882, as shown in Sowerby's "Pattern Book of Fancy Goods, lX, 1882".
No chips or cracks but has wear commensurate with its age and use in the form of scratches to the inside of the bowl and markings to the soles of the feet.
8" in diameter / 4.25" in height.
