19th Century Grand Tour Versailles Janus Urn Claude Ballin Antique Gilt Bronze

A superb 19th century Louis XIV style gilt bronze urn modelled after Claude Ballin's (1615-1678) 'Janus' urn for Versailles.

Of baluster form with raised handles depicting Janus heads and boar masks, bands of shell and acanthus leaves, complete with Greek key and oak leaf decoration.

Would have been produced to appeal to the Grand Tour taste of the day, likely in France although a foundry in Belgium also produced based on the model.

In great overall condition with some wear to gilt commensurate with age.
