Shoundo 19th Century Antique Japanese Meiji Kutani Pottery Charger Plate 九谷松雲堂製

A finely detailed late 19th century Japanese Meiji period Kutani pottery charger produced by the master potter Matsumoto Sahei / Shoundo.

Featuring 3 decorative medallion panels all differing in shape but harmoniously brought together to showcase a boat being rowed out to sea, a large peacock surrounded by flowers and other birds, and a travelling congregation with the emperor.

Has 6 character mark signature on the reverse reading '九谷松雲堂製' or 'Made by Kutani Shoundo'

Matsumoto Sahei (1851-1918) exhibited in many of the World Fairs and prominent exhibitions of the day during his career and received many awards for his work. In 1876, he received the artist name Shoundo from the nanga painter Tokuda Kansho and began to use the title the following year. Almost all of Matsumoto Sahei's creations are harbored in museums, with few pieces in private collections, and works of his rarely come up for sale online.

The Keisei Isogaya Museum of Art has a vase by Matsumoto Sahei which was exhibited in The Philadelphia Exhibition of 1876. Sahei is also listed as exhibiting in the 1878 World's Paris Exhibition, called the “Exposition Universelle", as well as the 1889 and 1900 editions of Paris' Universal Exhibition's. He also exhibited at the World's Columbian Exhibition of 1893 in Chicago and is included in “The Official Directory of the World's Columbian Exhibition”, as exhibiting incense burners and Porcelain.

This exemplary Shoundo charger is in great condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs, just come crazing and light wear to the gilt of the rim.
